U11 transcontinental girls field team battle hard, just missing out on provincial medal!
The Owen Sound U11 Transcontinental North Stars grinded out their final weekend of the summer on July 26th-28th in the Oshawa heat for the Ontario Girls Field Lacrosse Championships. They competed well in the B division with teams from Newmarket, Oakville, Six Nations, Owen Sound, Oshawa and Kawartha.
Friday consisted of two nailbiter games, both coming down to the final seconds of play. The first game against Six Nations ended with a hard fought North Stars 16-15 win, avoiding a tie game to force OT as regulation time ran out with a Six Nations buzzer beater shot being a few seconds too late. Game two of the day was another battle, facing Kawartha and pulling out a 12-11 win for Owen Sound to move into day two of play with a bye past the early morning elimination game and straight to the semi-finals.
The North Stars met Oakville in the semi finals on Saturday for a chance to move on to the gold medal game on Sunday. A slow start trailing 7-1 after the first quarter proved to be the difference, as each team scored nine goals each over the next three quarters to end the semi finals with that same six goal difference at a 16-10 win for Oakville. This loss sent the U11 North Stars into Sunday playing for the Bronze medal.
The Bronze medal game shaped up to be another exciting one, with another match up against Six Nations. The excitement built as the game was tied 11-11 after three quarters of play with some back and forth lacrosse. The North Stars girls ran out of gas in the fourth quarter, with Six Nations taking the win for the Bronze medal with a final score of 17-11.
Scoring over the weekend were Mila Minard (23), Sophie Burnett-Scott (8), Ireland Grimstead (5), Meyer Quaid (3), Clara Patterson (3), Norah Given (2) and singles from Harper Thompson and Evelyn School
Shutting the door in goal with many great saves this weekend was Isla Nickel, along with very strong defensive performances from Aubrey Walker, Lexy Bothwell and Heidi Singh. Leading the charge on the offensive side of the games were Mila Minard, Sophie Burnett-Scott, Harper Thompson, Ireland Grimstead, Meyer Quaid, Norah Given, Clara Patterson and Evelyn Scholl.
The Bench Staff and all of our parents are extremely proud of this group of girls this year who gave their best effort. Wishing the best of luck to our U11 graduates Sophie, Isla, Harper, Ireland and Norah who will be moving up to U13 next season.
Looking forward to another great season ahead of us for our U11 returnees and graduating U9 players moving up!
